Tourists from around New York State, and throughout the country, pack their bags & bicycles each summer and flock the Finger Lakes for the opportunity to enjoy the many splendors of this unique region. Take in the area’s landmark vineyards and wineries, hills and picturesque waterways as you ride at your own quiet, unhurried pace. Stops along the way allow for a snack or meal, drinks, or the opportunity to tour a winery or historic site. Take a dip at one of the region’s many swimming holes along the way, or take in some nightly entertainment offered in one of the towns and villages you pass through during your bicycle travels. Or, maybe just sit with a friend and enjoy the quiet solitude of a relaxed evening after a long day’s ride.

Organized multi-day trips and guided tours abound; options for self-guided bike tours and family outings along the lake are also plentiful here. Regardless of your pace or experience level, the Finger Lakes region offers enough variety to keep cyclists of every persuasion challenged, enthusiastic, and eager for more.

Tompkins County Bicycling Suitability Map

The Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council updated its Bicycling Suitability Map in 2008 to now include: different criteria for rural and urban roads; factors such as traffic volume & road condition; availability of shoulders; and indications where there are steep slopes. Ranking and road suitability ratings were created for average cyclists; however, it was designed to be used by anyone, ranging from beginner to expert. Multi-Use Trails in Tompkins County

This map, updated in February 2008, shows the status of the planned multi-use trail network for Tompkins County.Trails shown as existing have been built and are open to the public. Trails in progress are those that have been allocated funding and are at some stage in their design or construction. Proposed trails are those that have been identified in plans but have not been funded or advanced in any other way.
