blue_bike_on_sidewalkWelcome to bicycletravel.nybc.net, a website dedicated to the development of bicycle tourism, including the distribution of maps, local bike routes, and other touring resources in New York State.

A number of recent studies have consistently shown bicycle tourism is a boon to local economies across the United States. New York State’s network of signed bike routes, rural roads and scenic natural resources offer an untapped asset for the tourism economy. The New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) has teamed up with Empire State Development (ESD)—the state’s economic development agency and steward of the I LOVE NEW YORK tourism campaign—for its Explore NY initiative to boost bicycle-based tourism.

A longtime proponent of bicycle-based tourism, this new partnership formalizes NYBC’s leadership role as an information clearinghouse on touring the state by bike through the development of this website and increased promotion and distribution of our annual NY BIKES! Events Calendar.

Cycling is the second most popular recreational pastime in America, according to data compiled and published by the Tourism Industry Association. It is also an enjoyable way to stay healthy and active, a “green” method of alternative transportation that cuts down on traffic congestion and rising fuel costs, and an ideal approach for touring both urban and rural areas—particularly ones in New York which are rich with innumerable cultural, historic and natural resources. New York could very easily become a world class tourism destination for the growing numbers of on and off road bicyclists.
